Part Four · A life directed toward God
Chapter 15
Desire, ambition, and the wish to be remembered

Ambition can carry enthusiasm and hunger at the same time. You may want to create something worthwhile, and also want recognition for creating it. You may want your work to help people, and also want to be influential, admired, and remembered. These motives need not be collapsed into one explanation.
The Godward Way begins with admitting what is present. Pretending not to want recognition does little if recognition continues to govern your attention. The more useful sentence is, “I want this, and I can bring the whole desire before God.”
Consider the desire to teach The Godward Way. The message directs attention toward God, yet the act of teaching can awaken a strong wish to become the person associated with that message. You picture an audience, imagine a lasting influence, and feel the promise of being remembered. These are part of the material to offer.
You do not have to resolve the contradiction before beginning. “Father, here is my desire to speak about You. Here is my wish that people recognize me for doing so. Here is the imagined future I keep returning to. I offer the whole pattern toward You.” The prayer receives the mixed reality rather than presenting a purified version.
After the offering, you can work on the actual communication. You can learn to write more clearly, speak with greater ease, and understand what your audience needs. Offering does not prohibit skill. It prevents skill from being confused with a guarantee of human approval.
Communication can be understood through three layers. At the visible layer are language, style, and delivery. Beneath them is the benefit offered to the listener. Beneath that is the core belief from which the communication arises. In Godward teaching, that core concerns the real person, their inherent dignity, and their capacity to turn toward God.
When recognition takes over, the layers can become inverted. You begin with the impression you want to make, then shape the benefit and the belief to support it. Catching the desire lets you recognize this reversal. You can bring the need for admiration before God and return to the truth you intended to communicate.
An audience may still resist. They may find the idea unclear, reject its premise, or simply prefer another path. Their resistance is real. It should be considered for what it can teach you. It does not need to become a project of controlling their inner life.
You cannot responsibly treat another person’s disagreement as a failure to obey your revelation. They are a separate person with the capacity to judge. The reality of their separation is part of the very philosophy being taught. A Godward message that refuses the listener’s freedom contradicts its account of distinction.
The same applies to influence in business or art. You can pursue a project seriously and offer your ambition toward God. You can assess evidence, develop a plan, and adjust it. You need not pretend that the desired outcome already exists, or that your thoughts can compel the world to produce it.
Offering changes the relation to the imagined future. The future becomes something you hope for and work toward, rather than something on which your whole dignity depends. Failure can still hurt. Success can still delight you. Both remain experiences to receive and offer.
This also creates room for rest. A person who must earn existence through productivity finds inactivity threatening. A person whose dignity precedes achievement can ask whether work is actually required at this moment. The answer may be yes. It may also be that nothing needs to be done now.
Rest does not have to be disguised as a strategy for greater productivity. It can be part of a life received from God. You can enjoy an ordinary afternoon without making it evidence that you have wasted your potential.
Desire is therefore neither denied nor crowned. It is caught in its actual intensity, brought toward God, and placed within a life whose worth exceeds the outcome. Ambition can continue, but it has lost the right to become your creator.
